If you are new to the Enneagram, you might have noticed people saying they are a 2w3 and wondered what that little “w” meant. It’s simply the way that people list their Enneagram Wing. So, the designation 2w3 means that the person is a Type 2 with a 3 Wing. If you want to read all about what you need to know about Wings, check out this post.
One important thing to remember about wings is that your Wing can only be one of the the numbers on either side of your primary Type. For example, if you are a Type 2, the only possible options you have for a wing are 1 or 3. Many people get this confused because they think their wing is the second highest number on an Enneagram test they took. Let’s take a look at the definition of the wing, from the Enneagram Institute:
No one is a pure personality type: everyone is a unique mixture of his or her basic type and usually one of the two types adjacent to it on the circumference of the Enneagram. One of the two types adjacent to your basic type is called your wing.
Today, we’re going to talk about the situation where you know your Type, but you just aren’t sure which one of your wings is more dominant. I recommend finding your primary Type first, before determining your Wing. So, if you are still unsure of your Type, start here first.
These illustrations compare the two wings for each type. Use them help you pinpoint which of the two types you might be. Also, the princesses were added for fun and to make the graphics more relatable, but don’t spend too much time worrying about whether or not you relate to that character.
Enneagram Type 1 Wings
Type 1w9 is the Optimist. They tend to be more relaxed and introverted. They are also more detached and have idealistic approach to life. Type 1w2 is the Activist. They tend to be more extraverted and empathetic. They also tend to be a little critical than other 1s and more passionate and generous.
Enneagram Type 2 Wings
Type 2w1 is the Companion. They tend to be more introverted and disciplined. Their 1 wing makes helps them to be more idealistic and reflective, too. Type 2w3 is the Host. They tend to be more extraverted and charming. They tend to be more ambitious and competitive.
Enneagram Type 3 Wings
Type 3w2 is the Enchanter. They tend to be more extraverted and relationship focused. More than other 3s, they enjoy promoting and assisting others with their goals and accomplishments. Type 3w4 is the Professional. They tend to be more introverted and artistic. They tend to be more self-aware and authentic. They seek out beautiful aesthetics everywhere they go.
Enneagram Type 4 Wings
Type 4w3 is the Aristocrat. They tend to be more extraverted and ambitious. They are more goal-oriented, so they will put themselves out there and even market their skills more than other 4s. Type 4w5 is the Free Spirit. They tend to be more introverted and deep. They tend to be more testosterone cypionate injection analytical and intellectually observant and less likely to be affected by their emotions.
Enneagram Type 5 Wings
Type 5w4 is the Philosopher. They tend to be more creative and perceptive. They are a little better than other 5s at feeling and communicating their feelings rather than simply analyzing them. Type 5w6 is the Troubleshooter. They tend to be more analytical and focused on security. They also are practical and adept at problem solving, often working for the betterment of a group.
Enneagram Type 6 Wings
Type 6w5 is the Guardian. They tend to be more introverted and focused. They are more detached and independent and enjoy spending time alone. Type 6w7 is the Confidant. They tend to be more extraverted and sociable. They also are open to risk and and more comfortable with unexpected changes.
Enneagram Type 7 Wings
Type 7w6 is the Pathfinder. They tend to be more cooperative and relational. They are more dependable and reliable than other 7s. Type 7w8 is the Opportunist. They tend to be more adventurous and driven. They also are more assertive and ambitious, and more focused on efficiency and goals.
Enneagram Type 8 Wings
Type 8w7 is the Non-Conformist. They tend to be more extraverted and energetic. They are more social and outgoing and enjoy having a positive impact on their community. Type 8w9 is the Diplomat. They tend to be more introverted and mild mannered. They also are warmer and family-oriented and more approachable.

Type 9w8 is the Advisor. They tend to be more extraverted and energetic. They are more confident and more likely to enter into conflict than other 9s. Type 9w1 is the Negotiator. They tend to be more introverted and compliant. They also are more idealistic, with a deep sense of right and wrong.
