The Mint Julep is THE Kentucky Derby drink. A Derby Party just isn’t complete without the Mint Julep! Although I love a good tradition, I’ll admit that this Kentucky girl is not really that crazy about the Mint Julep. Last year, I made a fresh take on the Mint Julep with Strawberry Mint Juleps for Derby party goers that may not be drinking Bourbon. This year, in addition to the Mint Julep, I’m going to make another Kentucky Derby cocktail – the Kentucky Oaks Lily Cocktail.
The Kentucky Oaks is held the Friday before the Derby. The main race of the day is run by fillies and the winner is draped in blanket of lilies. Since it’s the ladies’ race, Oaks goers typically dress in pink attire. And, even though the Oaks is the day before the Derby, the fashion is just as important! So, in honor of this race, the Kentucky Oaks Lily Cocktail was created. It’s a decidedly more feminine cocktail than the Mint Julep, with flavors that are very similar to a Cosmopolitan. If you need Kentucky Derby Cocktails for your party, the Oaks Lily Cocktail is the perfect accompaniment to the Mint Julep for your Derby viewing party!
