In November, I participated in Lexington Christian Academy’s Peppermint & Pearls holiday market. One of the other vendors I had the chance to get to know was sweet Emily of SewLex. She was so much fun to chat with and as we talked, I learned she and her husband had started an amazing foundation, Piece of Her Heart.
After Emily’s daughter was diagnosed with Autism, she and her husband sought to help other families, so Piece of Her Heart was created:
We want to help other families who are walking in our shoes. Why? Because we know what it feels like to be overwhelmed financially when you face the task of caring for a person with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and we want to help shoulder that cost.
With this organization, Emily and her husband have created such beauty out of what was an initially devastating diagnosis. Piece of Her Heart helps with the finacial burden of families who are caring for someone with an ASD, through the sale of their beautiful autism t-shirt designs:
Each month, we will choose a family to support and $8 of every single tee purchased will be sent to the family to help lighten the financial load. It doesn’t matter if the shirt is blue or pink, large or small, every tee has a purpose.
This month you can read about the Lester family who is the family of the month. The family’s specific need is technology that will help him to communicate with his family and the world.
I was so honored to be asked to create the above austism t-shirt design for Piece of Her Heart. Emily asked me to create a look with the phrase “Different not Less”, a phrase made popular by Temple Grandin. The shirt can be ordered in men’s, women’s or children’s size and in navy or charcoal. There are a few other designs this month that are also available, too. Check them out here!
