Our summers are packed full with camps, baseball, and swim practices. It’s go, go, go around here most days. But, we definitely have some down time between those activities! So, we try to sneak in a little learning during that down time! This summer, we’re doing Summer Around the World activities to learn about some other cultures. Each week, we are “traveling” to a new country. We’re keeping it pretty simple – one craft or activity for each country, a treat or meal from that country and learning a few facts about the country.
I made, purchased or found a few traveling themed items to go with our activities. Our local dollar store carries these Passport sticker books, along with several travel theme stickers. I used the stickers to decorate the cardboard suitcase I made from a cereal box. To make the suitcase, I cut one edge off the box, then turned the box inside out. Using duct tape, I taped up the edges of the boxes and added handles. We’ll use the box to store the crafts we make.
I printed these boarding passes from this blog.
The suitcase tags were just pictures of awesome posters on Art.com.
Last week, we chose France as the country of the week. We sampled a French themed dinner, French palmier cookies, studied Claude Monet and did a Monet inspired craft.
This month’s Cooking Light magazine just happened to feature some recipes from the south of France. We tried the Buttered Radish Tartines (Tartine Radis-Beurre), Grated Carrot Salad (Carottes Rapees), and Goat Cheese Quiche (Quiche au Fromage de Chevre).
Our French inspired craft was based on Monet’s Bridge over a pond of Water Lillies painting. Check back later in the summer for a few more ideas from the different countries we visit during our Summer Around the World
