I’m thrilled to share this Fall Party that we hosted for my mother in law’s 75th birthday. The party was held on a lovely Sunday afternoon in October. It combined traditional fall party elements with my mother in law’s Indian heritage. It was also one of the most fun parties to plan because my lovely sister in law, Susan, and I planned the party together. Of course, it’s always more fun with two planning a party! She also did so much of the work preparing for the party. During the party, my sweet sis, Kelly, helped serve and clean up. If I was ever to start a catering company, she’d be the first person I’d hire!
The party was an afternoon open house, so there were plenty of appetizers for guest to nosh on while visiting with the other guests. We served samosas, pakora, vegetable cups, mango and cranberry chutney tartlets, fruit, and a jalapeno dip with assorted crackers. Most of the appetizers were placed on the dining table with the desserts on a small buffet table at the end of the dining room. Although the food was set up in our formal dining room, to give the party a fall feel, I incorporated some rustic accents, such as the woven table runner, white pumpkins, craft paper and twine garland, and antique brass candleholders.
Delicious vanilla and chocolate cupcakes were provided by Martine’s Pastries. Traditional Indian sweets, such as ladu and milk cake, were provided by Sagar Indian Market. For the dessert table, cake stands and antique compote dishes were simply stacked for a layered look.
One of the favorite elements of the party was a Hot Apple Cider Bar. Stay tuned this week for the recipe for the homemade apple cider. In addition to the cider, we provided the following toppings: Bourbon, Cinnamon, Whipped Topping, Cranberry Juice, and Caramel Sauce. The guests enjoyed making their own personalized drinks. The kids particularly loved this!!
White paper cups, napkins, striped straws, and favor boxes were all provided by Oriental Trading*. Oriental Trading is my first stop for party supplies. Their selection is unparalleled and I can always find the party supplies I need there. Also, their pricing is very reasonable. The little white boxes I used for the favors were filled with homemade fudge. The boxes are the perfect size for little goodies!!
The invitations incorporated a design that was inspired by a mandala design and the paisley, since they both have Indian origins.
The purple, ivory, turquoise, and gold color palette would also work well for any Fall Party. Adding a few natural elements, such as the woven table runner, craft paper food labels, and white pumpkins, gives the party a slightly rustic feel. These elements would be perfect for a Thanksgiving table, as well as any Fall Party.
Another favorite element of this party was the table of pictures of my mother in law. Guests enjoyed looking at pictures of my her from all stages of her life. It was a fun way to celebrate such a special lady!
