Gallery walls are one of my favorite décor ideas for a room. First, they are great because they are a fun way to add personality to a room. Second, they can cover a large, blank wall in an inexpensive way. Large scale artwork is often expensive, but a few smaller frames and décor pieces grouped together can cover the same amount of space, for much less cash.
I recently added a Gallery Wall to my daughter’s room. I gathered a few fun pieces, that she helped pick out, to cover a blank wall in her room. But, if you find it difficult to create your own gallery wall, I have a step-by-step guide for you.
How to Hang a Gallery Wall like a Pro in 7 Steps!
Step 1: Pick a Color Palette
My daughter’s room color palette is navy, teal, coral, and grey. Along with adding in some white, the color palette of the gallery wall kept within this color palette. Not only did I stick within this color palette on the gallery wall, but I also made sure that artwork elsewhere in the room, like on this bedside table, was kept within this color palette.
Step 2: Pick an Anchor Piece or Pieces
When building your layout, start with your largest pieces or a piece that you want to use for the focal point of your gallery wall. Start with that larger piece in the middle of the design and build out from there. You can also use 2-4 similar pieces grouped together, hung in the center, to make your focal point. For my daughter’s gallery wall, I chose the white 11×14″ frames and the ceramic deer as the focal points.
Step 3: Vary the Types of Pieces
To give your gallery wall more interest, you’ll want to combine different types of pieces. For this gallery wall, I used typographic and hand lettered color pieces, black and white photographs, metallic sculptures, colorful artwork, and a ceramic deer head. The texture of the silver sculpture was a fun juxtaposition next to the framed “Live a Little Love a Lot” hand lettered art.

Step 4: Vary the Size of the Pieces
Not only do you want to vary the type of artwork, you also want to vary the size of the artwork. This gallery wall includes different sized frames and also other pieces in smaller, unusual shapes, like these fabric banners.
Step 5: Once You Have Gathered the Pieces You Want to Include, Try Out Different Layouts on the Floor
Arrange your anchor pieces on the floor, then start building the gallery out from there. Try out a few different layouts. Make sure that you take a picture of each design on your cell phone. Then, compare the different designs and pick your favorite to recreate on the wall. Once you start hanging the pictures in your gallery wall, you can use the picture on your cell phone as your guide.
Step 6: Space Artwork at Least 2-3″ Apart
If you want a more traditional layout, keep the pieces spaced out evenly. However, if you want a more organic look, don’t worry about making sure the spacing is the exact same between each piece. For this gallery wall, I was more concerned with keeping the pictures centered between the ones that are aligned vertically and horizontally. Either method you choose, just make sure to not place any artwork closer than 2″-3″ together.
Step 7: Get Creative
Most importantly, make sure to add items to your gallery wall that make you happy! Get creative and add items that you will love. There is no real right or wrong way how to hang a gallery wall! Instead, create something that you will love in the room!
