For years, I struggled with my nightstand looking nice. It was always a mess and the way it was decorated just wasn’t right. And don’t even get me started on my hubby’s nightstand. It was always piled high with books and magazines. But, I found a 6 step process to make my nightstands look better
1. Start with a Lamp
Lamps are a must have on a nightstand. Pick one that has a height where the bottom of the shade hits slightly above your shoulder when you are siting on the bed. Since so much of our bedding is neutral colors, I picked a bright lamp to accessorize the room.
2. Add Artwork
You can either lean the artwork up against the wall, like I did above, or you can hang it just a few inches above the nightstand. I chose an 11×14″ frame matted to hold our 8×10″ Choose Joy hand lettered art print.
3. Add a Stack of Books
Next add a stack of books to your nightstand. This will not only ground the other décor on the nightstand, but it is also practical. Choose 2-3 books that you are currently reading to stack. Just make sure that you don’t let your stack get too high. Since my husband likes to read a lot of different books at one time, I placed a basket at the bottom of his nightstand. The basket can hold more than just the 2-3 books that sit on top of the nightstand.
4. Top the Stack of Books with A Living Object
On top of the stack of book, place a living or moving item. This includes plants, cut flowers or a candle. I love to have fresh cut flowers, like these that I cut from a hydrangea bush in my yard. However, I don’t always have that option, so I change it out with a potted plant.
5. Add a Small Tray
At night, I often jump in bed and then remember to take off my wedding rings and earrings. So, a tray on the nightstand is a great place to corral little items like that.
6. Add One Decorative or Whimsical Item
One final little touch to add some fun to your nightstand is to add some type of decorative item. I chose this gold bunny from Homegoods.
This 6 step process for decorating your nightstand will take some of the guess work out of decorating. Simply follow this process for a perfectly styled nightstand every time!
