To celebrate the Kentucky Derby, my children’s school hosts a Kid-tucky Derby the Friday before the Derby. Every year, the kids from the kindergarten classes race around a track with their stick horses. In the weeks leading up to the event, they make and decorate their own stick horses. They also design and make their own “jockey silks”. It is a fun event that both the children and parents alike enjoy.
This year was extra special because I had a little jockey running. “Riding” his horse, ThunderLine, he won his heat and placed (came in 2nd) in the Championship heat. He was a little disappointed that he didn’t win and even had to fight back tears, but once he received a trophy, all was fine. This year, the parents from each grade also set up a themed cupcake table for the kids in that grade.
